A formula that performs on a tabletop is not automatically ready for a commercial production line. Gold's Gym needed a creatine gummy system that could meet exacting quality standards, withstand real production conditions, control cost, and deliver the intended creatine target accurately.
Converted an unvalidated bench concept into a production ready system.
Reduced commercial cost while preserving the required product quality.
Achieved accurate creatine potency with minimal creatinine formation.
The challenge: a bench formula facing commercial reality
RSG's Director of Product, Kenny, came to the project with a basic formula built around one of the most commonly used pectin systems for creatine gummies from a leading global pectin supplier. The concept could produce a tabletop sample, but it had not been validated for commercial production.
That distinction mattered. Larger equipment, longer processing windows, ingredient handling, depositing, yield, and production timing expose weaknesses that small bench batches may never reveal. The commercial product also had to satisfy demanding sensory and quality expectations while reaching a viable cost.
The technical problem: protecting performance through scale up
Creatine gummies combine a substantial active load with a pectin system whose performance is highly sensitive to commercial processing conditions. Extended production timing can create a rapid loss of functional strength, increasing the risk of texture inconsistency, depositing problems, production loss, and an unacceptable finished product.
The solution required more than increasing an ingredient or shortening a single step. Constellation evaluated the formula and process as one connected system, then redesigned the commercial approach without exposing quality to unnecessary compromises.
The work: formula, process, flavor, and economics
Constellation worked through the scale up requirements with Kenny and the supplier's technical team, identifying where the tabletop formula and commercial process diverged. We made the adjustments required for production, refined the flavor, and engineered cost improvements while maintaining the quality standard established for the Gold's Gym product.
The commercial strategy addressed formula behavior, processing sequence, production timing, depositing performance, potency control, expected loss, and finished sensory quality together. The proprietary pectin grade, processing parameters, formula changes, and corrective methods remain confidential.
The result: commercial performance without lowering the standard
The product scaled successfully and met the project's core benchmarks. Production loss was minimized, the finished gummies maintained the required quality and flavor, and creatine potency reached the intended target accurately. Testing also demonstrated minimal conversion of creatine to creatinine.
Most importantly, cost improvements were achieved without treating quality as the variable to sacrifice. The result was not simply a larger version of the tabletop sample. It was a commercially engineered product system designed around the realities of repeatable production.
What this case study demonstrates
Specialty ingredients and supplier starting formulas can be useful development tools, but they do not replace commercial validation. Successful scale up requires understanding how formula architecture, active load, equipment, time, temperature, process sequence, sensory quality, and economics interact under production conditions.
Constellation bridges that gap. We protect the product intent, diagnose the variables that threaten it, and build the path from an approved concept to finished commercial inventory.
